Tannery Salzer – a vision becomes reality

salzer logo With the extracting of ore on the “Erzberg” leather was getting more and more important. So leather production had a great significance in Eisenerz.

One of the production facilities is the tannery Salzer. It was founded in 1548 and was named after its last owner. This tannery, which is situated near the historic district, was operated until 1953.

In 1995 the owner of the building was the municipality of Eisenerz. Since 1995 the building has not been inhabited. Today it is owned by a club which has the task to revitalize the object.

The condition of the building is very bad. So it is necessary to act quickly in order to prevent the entire decay of the cultural monument. Some things have already been done.

Overall concept

Herbert Krump, head of the club, made the overall concept of how to revitalize the building. The concept consists of five important points.

1.Tannery museum
The museum is supposed to contain an exhibition of original obtained machines and a huge collection of tools which were used in a tannery. This would be unique in Austria. It is also planned to show a demonstration about the making of leather products now and then.

2. Water and technology
This concept suggests giving extensive information about water. Visitors should be able to try operating water related machines. Topics would be hydraulic engineering and fluidics.

3. Market segment and sale
It deals with the sale of rare goods which are made of leather. Visitors should be able to get information about where to purchase certain goods.

4. Work shops
Work shops are supposed to be offered to craftsmen and clubs.

5. Snack-bar
A snack-bar is going to be built for visitors. Thus, new seasonal jobs would be created.

Aims and requirements for renovating the building

The condition of the building is very bad. So it is necessary to act quickly in order to prevent the entire decay of the cultural monument. That is the major aim. In doing so it is very important to be as authentic as possible. That is the reason why the club is professionally supported by the Styrian preservation of ancient monuments.

In 2004 the former governor of Styria made a generous donation which helped to start the intensive project.

With the help of donations and voluntary workers many building projects could be achieved.

Future prospects

One aim is the concept of “water as medium in its endless varieties”. Visitors should be able to get some insights into using water in order to operate machines. The historical aspect also plays an important role there.

The Tannery Salzer is located near the “Abenteuer Erzberg”. This is a huge advantage because more than 70.000 people visit the “Abenteuer Erzberg” per year. People who want to go from the historic district to the show mine can soon stop at the tannery museum.

The past few years have shown us that the goals of the project can be achieved. But it is a long and stony path. So we would be very thankful, if you made a contribution to the preservation of this cultural monument of our hometown. You can make a donation every time.
